SynopsisAcross the threshold of a film set is a space where bodies breathe and sense together, labouring to make visible what is usually only felt. In the making of the short films Animal Spirits (2013) by Daniel Hui and The Smell of Coffee (2020) by Nishok, both filmmakers navigated personal and emotional terrain to ultimately create something that sits between the physical and the unseen.
Programmed in partnership with Objectifs, we invite you to come and experience these liminal worlds for yourself, then listen to Daniel and Nishok share about their filmmaking process as well as how they care for themselves and the people they work with. Have questions or thoughts to share on the topic as well? Jump into the open dialogue, which will be moderated by Viknesh Kobinathan from Objectifs.
About the Arts Workers
Daniel Hui (he/him)
Filmmaker and WriterDaniel Hui is a filmmaker and writer. A graduate of the film programme at California Institute of the Arts, he is one of the founding members of 13 Little Pictures, a critically acclaimed independent film collective in Singapore. He has made four feature-length films: Eclipses (2011), Snakeskin (2014) Demons (2018), and Small Hours of the Night (2024).
Nishok (he/him)
Filmmaker and Documentary ProducerNishok is a filmmaker and documentary producer based in Singapore. His films seek to explore the half shades and hardly audible notes of human nature, with an emphasis on the metaphysical realm.
Viknesh Kobinathan, (he/him)
Assistant Film Programmer, ObjectifsViknesh Kobinathan is a cultural worker, organiser and educator, whose practice explores the gathering around sound and image as an act of care, healing, rest and refusal. He is currently Assistant Film Programmer at Objectifs–Centre for Photography & Film.
Objectifs–Centre for Photography & Film
Established in 2003, Objectifs is a visual arts space in Singapore that is dedicated to film and photography. Our goal is to cultivate original voices in visual storytelling, and to inspire and broaden perspectives through the power of images. We do this by presenting a year round programme of exhibitions, screenings, workshops, talks, mentorships and residencies, aimed at fostering dialogue about visual culture, and advancing the practice and appreciation of photography and film.
